An hour’s drive from Queenstown…

At the southern end of Lake Wanaka sits the ski town of the same name. With less tourist hype than Queenstown, the tranquil atmosphere of the lake is echoed in Wanaka town itself, which has cosmopolitan flair but a chilled-out vibe and a good selection of restaurants, cafes and bars.

Wanaka is home to the South Island’s largest ski and snowboard resort – Treble Cone. Though perfect for skiers of all abilities, more experienced skiers will love Treble Cone’s long groomed trails, off-piste terrain and backcountry areas, not forgetting the stunning views over Lake Wanaka itself.

A short drive south of Wanaka town you’ll find Cardrona, another area with terrain to suit all abilities. Cardrona has three wide open basins with progressive terrain, while the altitude creates some of New Zealand’s best snow conditions (supported by innovative snowmaking and snow management systems). And for those with shredding in their soul, Cardona also has two halfpipes (including New Zealand’s only Olympic 22ft Superpipe), a gravity-X course and a world-renowned big air jump.

Check out some of our Wanaka highlights below…

TREBLECONE

Some days, as you glide down the long groomers and easily accessed off-piste terrain at Treble Cone, you’d be forgiven for feeling like you’re skiing on a sunny island above the clouds when the valley fog rolls in and obscures the landscape below. And when it does, make sure you have your camera ready to document this breathtaking phenomena, typical to the lake filled valleys below.

Treble Cone is truly a skiers mountain with wide open powder faces, fun little drops and playful natural half-pipes that will bring out the child in anyone. With a little hiking and fresh air in your lungs, advanced riders can explore exciting chutes and uncrowded backcountry terrain all within the safety of Treble Cone’s patrolled boundaries.

Beginner riders are uniquely catered for with a program developed specifically for the terrain on offer, so eager first timers will be off on their quest to ski the intermediate trails as soon as possible while taking in the stunning panoramas. With quality options on offer, choosing a restaurant on Treble Cone might be challenging; from fine dining and cocktails, freshly baked New Zealand meat pies and a Southern BBQ dishing up mouthwatering slow-cooked meats and healthy salads - in fact, our recommendation is to try a different one each day! And when your legs are genuinely worn out, it will be time to grab an aprés drink and watch the day come to a close in the mountaintops.

If there is a resort in New Zealand that appeals to practically everyone, then Cardrona is it. From the first-time skier to speed demon and everyone in between, there’s something to make every skier feel like they’re at home in this progressive and comfortable mountain playground. With exciting and adventurous programs for kids and teens, there are plenty of places to explore on perfectly groomed runs throughout the idyllic beginner and intermediate terrain.

Advanced skiers will be eyeing off wide open groomers where they can put their head down and ski long arcing carved turns on the speed friendly piste. For the adventurous souls among us, there are off-piste spoils to be had that will keep everyone entertained, especially after a snowfall.

And when it's time to rest and refuel, at Cardrona you are spoiled for choice with 8 distinctly different cafes and restaurants that include everything from a quick pit stop to warm your toes or a fine dining venue to enjoy a long lunch with friends. Our favourite lunchtime indulgence is The Mezz, for one of the best a la carte meals in the New Zealand Alps - and for those who have not yet sipped glasses of champagne from a mountain top, might be best to end their day at Vista Bar for an unforgettable aprés session amongst the alpenglow.
