Spend 3 days based out of Whistler’s backcountry Kees and Claire Hut, learning the foundations of backcountry ski survival. Your ACMG guide will teach you basic avalanche safety, backcountry travel as well as essential survival techniques from fabricating emergency shelters to rationing food and plenty in-between. A fun, factual and challenging 3 days, staying in a backcountry hut along the iconic Spearhead Range.

This 3-day, action-packed course includes 2 nights at the Kees and Claire Hut in Whistler's backcountry, 3 days of instruction by an ACMG qualified ski guide and backcountry meals.

Taking place in Whistler's backcountry this course can be booked alone or as part of a longer bespoke ski trip. You will ski tour out to the Kees and Claire Hut located by Russet Lake along the iconic Spearhead Range, where you will stay for 2 nights.

Designed for skiers who have some backcountry experience and a good level of fitness. You do not need to be an expert in the backcountry, but some knowledge of ski touring equipment use is required.

This course can take place between December and April each year, when Whistler's backcountry has a good base and solid snowpack. It is recommended to book at least 6 months in advance,, though we can usually accommodate last-minute requests on a private basis.

This three-day backcountry ski survival course is ideal for those looking to take their ski touring to the next level, or as preparation for a classic ski tour such as the Spearhead Traverse. Learn a full range of techniques for travelling efficiently through alpine terrain, such as route planning, avalanche avoidance, digging snow caves, constructing emergency shelters, and basic wilderness first aid and rescue.

Spend your evenings getting a taste of alpine hut life as you discuss the day’s learnings, cook backcountry meals, and acquire tips and tricks from your guide on how to stay warm at night and stop your boots from freezing.

Situated within Garibaldi Provincial Park, with views of Fissile and Whirlwind mountains above and Russet Lake below, the Kees and Claire Hut is the first of three huts to be built along the Spearhead Traverse. The first of its kind in Canada, this backcountry hut is heated, with limited Wi-Fi connection, propane cooking stoves, the nicest compostable toilets we’ve seen as well as private bunk spaces. Take a look at some of our staff pictures below.

As with all private trips, we can customise this multi-day course to your requirements, so if you’re looking to learn a specific skill just let us know and we can create a custom itinerary for you paired the most appropriate guide.
